Just got back into the USA from being in France.
I only speak English!
I just recently went on a trip to France. It’s a totally different culture than what I’m used to, and everyone was speaking French. I was so thankful we had someone with us who translated English to French, and vice versa. He helped us order food, get a taxi, shop, and know what things were, etc…
Even though many things are the same, there are many things that are different. Their food isn’t seasoned as much as we season our food, and they take 2-4 hours to eat each time they have a meal because of the different courses, and time to order and get the “ticket” to pay for the meal. In the US, we are definitely more in a hurry all the time compared to people in Europe.
People in Paris seemed to be more serious than I’m used to. I smile a lot at people, and over there, not many people smiled back at me. In fact, many of them gave me dirty looks and seemed to be somewhat judging me. I guess they could tell I was a tourist!
It’s easy to feel out of place when you are in a different country, especially one that speaks a different language everywhere you go, and their English isn’t that great.
